First Memories with a Pencil in Hand

Colored pencils have been MAB’s companions since childhood, just as they have been for most of us. Yet, perhaps because they are so ordinary and accessible, they are often dismissed as mere toys—incapable of creating true art.

MAB encountered this very prejudice early on in art school. Back then, it seemed that anyone who pretended to understand "high art" would look down their nose at a simple box of colored pencils.

200 Monumental Drawings Created Live Before the World

On the summer solstice of 2004, the Defence of Colored Pencils project was born. MAB stepped out of her studio and into the public eye, creating massive drawings on giant sheets of paper (nearly 4 feet wide!) to prove to the world that simple colored pencils can easily rival any traditional master technique.

She drew her very first monumental piece live in Prague’s Old Town Square. Over the next twenty years, this artistic mission grew into an incredible collection of 200 large-format drawings created across the Czech Republic and beyond. In 2008, MAB won first prize at the l'Art au Soleil symposium in France, and her public drawings repeatedly enchanted audiences in the Netherlands and Slovakia. However, the greatest number of these masterpieces came to life right inside her own Magic Pencil Gallery in the heart of Prague since 2009.

The Grand Exhibition at Prague's Historic Carolinum

For two decades, MAB reigned as the undisputed Queen of Colored Pencils in the public eye. Following her monumental 20-year retrospective exhibition at the Carolinum—the historic 14th-century heart of Prague's Charles University—in 2024, she has stepped back from frequent public appearances. Today, she retreats into the quiet sanctuary of her studio to focus on deep, intricate projects that require her full concentration.

The Defense of Colored Pencils project, which captured the hearts of the media and the public alike, now flourishes beautifully on social media. MAB’s art has brought together a wide global family of admirers on Facebook and Instagram. Interestingly, 80% of her followers come from abroad—which is hardly surprising, since the vibrant language of her drawings needs no translation.
