"Willow, the Kind Confessor " (2007) is a colored pencil drawing by Marie Brožová, created live in public in Vodňany (Czech Republic) as part of her long-term project The Defense of Colored Pencils. The original artwork is an impressive A0 format, measuring 118.9 × 84.1 cm (46.8 × 33.1 inches). This piece is featured as an illustration in the artist's first book, The Soul of Trees.

The Story Behind the Art

A gentle willow fairy combs her long green hair, tenderly cradling a bird's nest in her palm. Tucked away in a hidden nook of emerald leaves, an ear is carved inside a tree hollow—patiently listening to the world without a single word of judgment. A young girl kneels beside it, whispering her secrets as if in a sacred confessional. In another corner of the branches, young lovers have found a safe haven of their very own. Down on the shore, a fisherman has caught a broken umbrella, while the real fish swim safely below, guarded by a beautiful rusalka wearing a dandelion wreath. High above, even more fish glide gracefully through the drifting clouds in the sky.

Hidden Details to Discover

Look closely at the top right corner to find a tall chimney where a stork has made its nest. This is a classic and beloved sight in the South Bohemian landscape where this drawing was created.
