"Wanderings with the White Lady" (2006) is a colored pencil drawing by Marie Brožová, created live in public in Jindřichův Hradec (Czech Republic) as part of her long-term project The Defense of Colored Pencils. The original artwork is an impressive A0 format, measuring 118.9 × 84.1 cm (46.8 × 33.1 inches).
The Story Behind the Art
In this mesmerizing piece, Marie Brožová draws a dreamlike portrait of Jindřichův Hradec as seen from the gently flowing Nežárka River. This ancient town feels like a living fairytale, where almost every old house harbors its own secret ghost in the cellar, and locals live in quiet harmony with age-old legends. The most beloved of these is Perchta, the legendary White Lady of Rožmberk. Her spirit is tied to the tragic fate of a noblewoman trapped in a loveless marriage. Since her passing in 1476, she has walked the halls of the Rožmberk estates, appearing most frequently right here in Jindřichův Hradec. For centuries, she has been a silent guardian of her lineage—whispering bittersweet omens of approaching death or fire, but also softly heralding joyful milestones like the birth of a child.
Hidden Details to Discover
Look closely along the riverbank to find a vodník (a traditional Czech watersprite). This unique creature from Slavic folklore—resembling a green-suited gentleman with frog-like webbed hands—guards the rivers and collects souls in little porcelain cups. It is a wonderful nod to the slightly eerie nature of Czech fairy tales, which children love all the more for their touch of mystery.
