"Vigil of the Lord of the Seas" (2012) is a colored pencil drawing by Marie Brožová, created live in public in Prague as part of her long-term project The Defense of Colored Pencils. The original artwork is an A0 format, measuring 118.9 × 84.1 cm (46.8 × 33.1 inches).
The Story Behind the Art
Deep within the ship's hold during a long, restless night, an insomniac pirate captain receives an unexpected visit from a mysterious mermaid. Over a shared glass of rich red wine, they speak softly of the legendary treasures awaiting him somewhere out there in the vast unknown, and perhaps of the secrets that drove him to the open sea, leaving his past behind. Resting on the wooden table beside a pearl-inlaid pistol is a delicate locket bearing the portrait of a beautiful woman. The flickering candlelight reflects off scattered seashells and an antique globe, blending with the warm hue of the wine as it gently sinks into the polished growth rings of the table.

Look up into the shadows of the captain's quarters—surprising as it may be, a vigilant cat quietly watches over the entire clandestine scene from above.
