"Turquoise Mermaid" (2009) is a colored pencil drawing by Marie Brožová, created live in public in Prague as part of her long-term project The Defense of Colored Pencils. The original artwork is an impressive A0 format, measuring 118.9 × 84.1 cm (46.8 × 33.1 inches). This piece is featured in the artist's second book, The Soul of Stones.
The Story Behind the Art
The rain is slowly clearing, leaving the woodlands glistening and alive with wonder. A little girl in a bright yellow raincoat and matching rain boots has set out to explore the misty forest alongside her grandfather, seeing the world through eyes of pure magic. Perched right outside on the cabin's window sill, a mesmerizing blonde mermaid with wavy hair sits side-by-side with her feline companion, sipping coffee from a fish-patterned mug. All around them, the vibrant forest is bustling with hidden enchantment, where even cats in love stroll hand-in-paw under a shared umbrella.
Hidden Details to Discover
Look closer at the whimsical cabin window—notice that the cat sitting on the sill also sports a playful fish tail and wears a mysterious domino mask, perfectly matching the turquoise mermaid.
