"The Sun in Capricorn" (2015) is a colored pencil drawing by Marie Brožová, created live in public at her famous Magic Pencil Gallery in the heart of Prague as part of her long-term project The Defense of Colored Pencils. The original artwork is an impressive A0 format, measuring 118.9 × 84.1 cm (46.8 × 33.1 inches). This piece is featured in the artist's Astrology series.

The Story Behind the Art

The sign of Capricorn is woven from cosmic darkness and the endlessness of stellar galaxies. It belongs to the Earth signs, yet there is an entirely distinct quality within it—ice. The Water of feelings and emotions, neither fluid nor adaptable, found its own form under the influence of frost, changing its state of matter into crystalline solitude. The King of the Midnight Sun has ascended to the very peak of the mountain. He is alone, yet not alone, accompanied by sleeping eagles and waking owls. He waits for no one, needs no one. He appears detached but wears his heart on his sleeve, even though it is made of stone and endures more than other human hearts. Spring is far away, summer is as far as it could possibly be, yet the hope of the solstice shines in his eyes.

Hidden Details to Discover

In mythology, the Capricorn symbol is represented by the Sea-Goat, featuring the head and forelegs of a goat and the hindquarters of a fish. Notice the tiny clock face on one of the stones along the path to the summit—the sign of Capricorn rules over time. Within the gates of the austere stone castle, a Christmas tree glows. Capricorn brings you back to the original message of Christmas, stripped of all silver and gold tinsel—a message of hope and of light born in the midst of the deepest darkness.
