"The Sun in Cancer" (2015) is a colored pencil drawing by Marie Brožová, created live in public at her famous Magic Pencil Gallery in the heart of Prague as part of her long-term project The Defense of Colored Pencils. The original artwork is an impressive A0 format, measuring 118.9 × 84.1 cm (46.8 × 33.1 inches). This piece is featured in the artist's Astrology series.
The Story Behind the Art
To love and be loved takes courage, and the King of Hidden Worlds can only open his heart in a safe space. This journey often leads back to childhood to reconnect with our original dreams—the very time we learned whether to seek acceptance, strive for conditional love, or embrace it unconditionally. Set during the magic of Midsummer Night, this drawing depicts a fern-crowned king kneeling beside a woodland spring. Cradling a crayfish and surrounded by fairies and elves, he is about to drink from the spring of knowledge. The full moon hangs brightly above, reflecting his infinite dreams.
Hidden Details to Discover
You can find the Cancer zodiac symbol etched onto the chalice. Do not miss the meditating cat sitting in a lotus position right beside it. Aside from this serene feline, look closely to find three more cats hidden within the drawing, and one more cat’s reflection captured inside the crystal ball. Even the candles possess their own living faces.
