"The Local Meridian" (2005) is a colored pencil drawing by Prague artist Marie Brožová, created live in public in Jindřichův Hradec (Czech Republic) as part of her long-term project The Defense of Colored Pencils. The original artwork is an impressive A0 format, measuring 118.9 × 84.1 cm (46.8 × 33.1 inches).
The Story Behind the Art
Jindřichův Hradec is a town where history seamlessly merges with fairy tales. Its charm lies in the fact that it has never turned into a tourist amusement park, remaining a living home for its locals. Almost every house possesses its own ghost, and every rooftop tile could tell a story. Directly above the Church of the Assumption, the 15th meridian east splits the sky, while the friendly faces of the universe watch over the town from above.
Hidden Details to Discover
Roaming the rooftops is the spirit of Perchta of Rožmberk, the famed White Lady, quietly accompanied by her cat.
