"The Firebird" (2016) is a colored pencil drawing by Marie Brožová, created live in public at her famous Magic Pencil Gallery in the heart of Prague as part of her long-term project The Defense of Colored Pencils. The original artwork is an impressive A0 format, measuring 118.9 × 84.1 cm (46.8 × 33.1 inches).

Under the velvet blanket of the night, the fairy tale Firebird lights up a secret, enchanted garden, landing gracefully among the branches of a tree laden with golden apples. In this magical realm, shooting stars seamlessly blend with the iridescent feathers shed during the bird's journey to Earth. In the dim light from a softly glowing country house window, you can see a little girl and her faithful cat sitting quietly, hidden behind a rhododendron, finally witnessing that breathtaking moment as everyday reality intertwines with the limitless world of imagination.

This drawing captures a cherished childhood dream. When Marie Brožová was little, she spent her days imagining that all her favorite fairy tales unfolded right in her own backyard. She longed to stay awake until dark, convinced that if she waited long enough, she would glimpse the Firebird arriving to claim the golden apples from their family tree. The tabby cat sitting beside little Marie is not just a cat. His name was Cookie, and he lived to be twenty years old.
