"Sun of Raptors, Moon of Owls" (2010) is a colored pencil drawing by Marie Brožová, created live for the public in Prague as part of her long-term project The Defense of Colored Pencils. The original artwork is an impressive A0 format, measuring 118.9 × 84.1 cm (46.8 × 33.1 inches).

The Story behind the Art

Inspired by indigenous traditions, the drawing features sacred totems: powerful diurnal birds of prey representing the male ancestral lineage, and wise owls guiding the female lineage. They walk beside us still, quietly cheering us on, passing the torch of hope so we may carry it just a little further in our own lives.

Hidden Details to Discover

Look closely at the magnificent headdress worn by the chief. While eagle feathers were reserved for rare acts of bravery, turkey feathers—like the ones depicted here—were highly honored by many tribes as symbols of harvest, ground connection, and the blessings of the Earth.
