"Subterranean Sea" (2004) is a colored pencil drawing by Marie Brožová, created at the beginning of her long-term project The Defense of Colored Pencils. The original artwork is an impressive A0 format, measuring 118.9 × 84.1 cm (46.8 × 33.1 inches).
The Story Behind the Art
Deep within a stalactite cave accessible by stairs or a whimsical elevator, a beach opens up, overlooking a subterranean sea. Instead of seagulls, bats soar overhead, yet the cavern is bursting with vibrant colors. Ruby strawberries and sapphire blueberries scatter the ground, joined by lost keys and paper boats that navigated their way to the underground rivers. A red-haired girl stands on a cliff's edge with her fox, gazing out at the distant horizon.
