"Spring Shower" (2009) is a colored pencil drawing by Marie Brožová, created live in public in Prague as part of her long-term project The Defense of Colored Pencils. The original artwork is an A0 format, measuring 118.9 × 84.1 cm (46.8 × 33.1 inches). This image is featured as an illustration in the children's book Where the Sun Lies, which is also available in English.
The Story Behind the Art
A little girl in a yellow raincoat goes for a walk with her grandfather, discovering the beauty of the world even in the rain. An abandoned dachshund, shivering in a bed of crocuses under a black umbrella, might not see the magic yet, but a new home awaits him soon. From a fluffy cloud, a personified Spring Rain shower waters the earth with a blue watering can, while the sky begins to clear, hinting at the sunshine to come. After all, spring is here!
Hidden Details to Discover
In this artwork, Marie Brožová reminisces about her grandfather, who taught her to embrace nature even in bad weather. He showed her that those who venture out in the rain can witness unseen wonders—like mermaids riding into the land on raindrops to see what our world looks like. The children's castle by the path is real; though the original house was demolished long ago and replaced by a new one, this little castle still stands tucked away in the garden to this day.
