"Princess Evening Star" (2010) is a colored pencil drawing by Prague artist Marie Brožová, created live in public in Brno (Czech Republic) as part of her long-term project The Defense of Colored Pencils. The original artwork is an impressive A0 format, 118.9 × 84.1 cm (46.8 × 33.1 inches).
The Story Behind the Art
The witchy princess embodies the mature form of feminine wisdom. Her eyes carry an urgent message of truth that cannot be escaped. She sits on a coastal cliff overlooking the western horizon, where Venus, the evening star, shines like a jewel as it sets in the twilight sky. As she sips garnet-red wine, pomegranate seeds lead her into the depths of the underworld—a place where all the treasures and terrors of the subconscious lie in wait. This artwork is dedicated to those who feel it is too late for change, or who lack the courage to follow their inner voice.
Hidden Details to Discover
Marie Brožová began creating this piece by starting from the very tip of the princess's shoe. She did this to prove a point to skeptics in Brno who could not believe she already had the entire composition perfectly mapped out in her mind before laying down her first stroke.
