"Pied Piper" (2019) is a colored pencil drawing by Prague artist Marie Brožová. Created in her atelier, the original artwork is an A3 format piece, measuring 42 × 29.7 cm (16.5 × 11.7 inches).

The Story Behind the Art

A November night falls. As the streets grow empty and people lock themselves in the safety of their homes, the Pied Piper wanders through the town. The mesmerizing melody of his pipe has drawn an entire army of mice, trapped within the folds of his flowing cloak. He walks alone, invisible to all but the cats and bats, yet he has caught the eye of a young lady looking out from her window with a candle in her hand. Under a crimson moon bleeding across the black sky, his path remains a mystery. Will he climb the hill along the Way of the Cross toward the heavens? Or will he disappear into the town, where "respectable" people live out their mundane lives and hide behind the curtains of their radiant windows?

Interesting Details

The artist was inspired by the classic German legend of the Pied Piper of Hamelin, a mysterious musician hired by a town to lure away a plague of rats with his magical pipe. When the citizens refused to pay for his services, he returned to seek a dark revenge. Using the same enchanting music, he led the town's children away into a mountainside, never to be seen again.
