"Night Flight" (2008) is a colored pencil drawing by Prague artist Marie Brožová, created live in public in Banská Štiavnica (Slovakia) as part of her long-term project The Defense of Colored Pencils. The original artwork is an A0 format, measuring 118.9 × 84.1 cm (46.8 × 33.1 inches).
The Story Behind the Art
When Marie Brožová arrived in the historic town of Banská Štiavnica—nestled within a volcanic caldera, honeycombed with gold mines, and filled with mysterious back streets—it immediately found its way into her dreams. On her very first night, she dreamt of floating above the town in her bed, accompanied by a teapot and a clowder of cats. Half-asleep, she soared over Štiavnica, which felt alive and fluid in the dark, its presence marked only by the glowing, colorful windows of houses scattered across the hillsides. The town revealed itself as a cat: noble, with a keen (and occasionally dark) sense of humor, and careful about whom it chooses to welcome.
Hidden Details to Discover
"Night Flight" was created on the terrace of a teahouse set within a historic building, from which miners were once summoned to their shifts by rhythmic knocking. This place offers a breathtaking view of the town center and the remarkable natural relief of the crater, which—to a keen eye—resembles the head of a cat.
