"Maple – the Painter of Autumn" (2007) is a colored pencil drawing by Prague artist Marie Brožová, created live in public in Jičín (Czech Republic) as part of her long-term project The Defense of Colored Pencils. The original artwork is an impressive A0 format, measuring 118.9 × 84.1 cm (46.8 × 33.1 inches). This piece is featured as an illustration in the artist's first book, The Soul of Trees.
The Story Behind the Art
A painter in a paint-splattered white coat sweeps autumn leaves onto the canvas with such vitality that they leap from the frame, swirling out to color the world on the wings of the wind. Nearby, children caught in the creative spirit create their own leaves with colored pencils, while airy castles of their boundless imagination drift above them. Watching over their safety is a majestic golden lion – a guardian visible only to their innocent eyes.
Hidden Details to Discover
Among the leaves drifting above the easel, look closely to find numerous sprites with wings cleverly crafted from maple samaras traditionally known as "helicopters."
