"Hazel, the Fortune Teller" (2007) is a colored pencil drawing by Prague artist Marie Brožová. Created in her atelier, the original artwork is an A3 format piece, measuring 42 × 29.7 cm (16.5 × 11.7 inches). This image is featured as an illustration in the artist's first book, The Soul of Trees.
The Story Behind the Art
In a small chamber filled with herbs and potions, a young witch sits before a chessboard, ready for a game. She invites us to choose our fate – black or white – holding hidden chess pieces in her palms. Beside the board, two candles flicker next to a crystal ball and a black cat glancing back at us. Even the floor echoes the game, covered in a checkered pattern of yellow and green reed mats. While a warm fire crackles in the fireplace, the window reveals a stark, snowy plain outside.
Hidden Details to Discover
Hazelnuts once aided Celtic druids with their divination. This artwork captures the hazel tree in all its transformations – from branches adorned with catkins to lush green leaves and ripening nuts.
