"Hades and Persephone" (2005) is a colored pencil drawing by Prague artist Marie Brožová, created live in public in Kutná Hora (Czech Republic) as part of her long-term project The Defense of Colored Pencils. The original artwork is an A0 format, measuring 118.9 × 84.1 cm (46.8 × 33.1 inches).
The Story Behind the Art
This piece captures the ancient underground beneath Kutná Hora with its silver mines and water nymphs, whose strands of hair rise to the surface to feed the wells above. Below, at a crossroads, sit Hades, the lord of the underworld, and his reluctant wife Persephone. Two rivers flow beneath them: Mnemosyne, the white River of Memory, reserved for the souls of the finest people, and Lethe, the black River of Forgetfulness, destined for all others.
Hidden Details to Discover
Marie Brožová's public drawing event in Kutná Hora was accompanied by an exhibition in the Gothic Chapel of Corpus Christi. The impressive Gothic window of this very chapel is beautifully captured directly within the drawing.
