"Grandmother Story-teller" (2007) is a colored pencil drawing by Prague artist Marie Brožová, created live in public in Ede (Netherlands) as part of her long-term project The Defense of Colored Pencils. The original artwork is A0 format, measuring 118.9 × 84.1 cm (46.8 × 33.1 inches). This piece is featured as the cover illustration for the artist's debut book, The Soul of Trees.
The Story Behind the Art
Inside the hollow of an ancient linden tree lives a smiling grandmother who loves telling fairy tales to the children. Her stories are cherished by the entire forest—cats, dogs, and even the souls of the trees hidden among the golden leaves high in the branches.
Hidden Details to Discover
Created during The Defense of Colored Pencils project in the Netherlands, this artwork features the soul of the Czech national tree—the linden. A lovely nod to the host country can be found in the background, where a typical Dutch house stands behind the tree, complete with a traditional miniature garden.
