Gothic is made of Stone and Wind (print)

"Gothic is made of Stone and Wind" (2007) is a colored pencil drawing by Prague artist Marie Brožová, created live in public in Kutná Hora (Czech Republic) as part of her long-term project The Defense of Colored Pencils. The original artwork is an A0 format, measuring 118.9 × 84.1 cm (46.8 × 33.1 inches). 

The Story Behind the Art

When Marie Brožová decided to draw the wind, the one that "swells the slender yards of pillars, opens the blossoms of finials, pleats the robes of stone saints, and breaks the ribs of cathedrals", she summoned such a gale around St. Barbara's Cathedral in Kutná Hora that she had to tie her drawings to their easels to keep them from flying away. That same mischievous wind might have even whispered to a little girl to "borrow" a pencil while the artist wasn't looking and scribble a crude circle onto the paper. Colored pencils can't be erased, but luckily, she hit the exact spot where the wind's head was meant to be. No one ever noticed; the wind just ended up with a slightly rounder face than originally planned.
