"Ghostberry" (2022) is a colored pencil drawing by Prague artist Marie Brožová. Created in her atelier, the original artwork is an A3-format piece, measuring 42 × 29.7 cm (16.5 × 11.7 inches).
The Story Behind the Art
This artwork stems from the artist's vivid memory of a park with a flowing stream, where every rapid turned into an icy waterfall in winter. Snowberry bushes lined the path, creating a sanctuary for birds and perhaps for the spirits driven from their summer shelters by the snow. Here, a snowberry spirit holds one of the paper boats that little Marie set sail during the summer, hoping they would reach the sea.
Hidden Details to Discover
In the distance, you can see little Marie looking down the stream and her grandparents crossing the bridge. Snowberry, also known as ghostberry, is very popular among children in Czechia. They love to play with the ripe berries because of the satisfying popping sound they make when stepped on or thrown to the ground.
