"Black Rose in the Darkness" (2004) is a colored pencil drawing by Marie Brožová, created live in public in Prague as part of her long-term project The Defense of Colored Pencils. The original artwork is an impressive A0 format, measuring 118.9 × 84.1 cm (46.8 × 33.1 inches).
The Story Behind the Art
Marie Brožová created this piece during one of her very first public drawing sessions, for the first time in the bustling environment of a commercial Prague passage where thousands of people flowed daily. In the evenings, she would find peace at her cottage near the forest, gazing into the dark, starry sky. She brought this tranquility in her heart to the public, which is reflected in the central part of the painting's cosmic harmony, while the hustle and restlessness are captured within the window frame, imprinted by all the passing people.
Hidden Details to Discover
A black rose in a vase, guarded by a snake, blooms in a window overlooking the cosmic darkness inhabited by celestial beings, where a higher harmony reigns. The wall around the window is filled with a multitude of restlessly shifting faces.
