"Wild River" (2018) is a colored pencil drawing by Marie Brožová, created live in public in Karlovy Vary (Czech Republic) as part of her long-term project The Defense of Colored Pencils. The original artwork is an impressive A0 format, measuring 118.9 × 84.1 cm (46.8 × 33.1 inches). This drawing is featured in the Souls of Czech Rivers series, inspired by the Střela River.

The Story Behind the Art

On a crisp autumn day, a lone archer settles with her bow and a loyal hunting dog by a quiet weir in the river valley, right beneath the shadow of Rabenstein Castle. In the warm embrace of the golden afternoon sunshine, falling amber leaves and blossoming tansy dissolve into a gentle, mesmerizing glow. According to ancient lore, Rabenstein Castle was built by a powerful wizard in a single night after he recovered his lost emerald-green ring, which was miraculously discovered inside a shot-down raven. This mythical bird inspired the castle's name, which translates from German as the "Raven’s Stone."

Hidden Details to Discover

Look closely amidst the wilderness: despite the presence of the hunting dog, a clever black cat is hiding in plain sight. Another feline companion can be spotted nearby, quietly accompanying the legendary wizard and his swirling flock of ravens.
