"Underground River" (2018) is a colored pencil drawing by Marie Brožová, created live in public in Prague as part of her long-term project The Defense of Colored Pencils. The original artwork is an impressive A0 format, measuring 118.9 × 84.1 cm (46.8 × 33.1 inches).
The Story Behind the Art
Deep within the mystical underworld of the Moravian Karst, several secret subterranean streams weave together to form the legendary Punkva River. For a fleeting, dramatic moment, she emerges into the soft daylight at the very bottom of the awe-inspiring Macocha Abyss, before plunging back into the echoing dark domes of the Punkva Caves—where dreamlike boats glide silently across her surface. The soul of this underground river embodies a profoundly resilient feminine energy. It represents the sacred power of women to withdraw inward when the world grows too loud, to heal in the quiet, nurturing darkness, and finally to emerge back into the brilliant light—stronger, wiser, and more beautiful than ever before.
