"Gold-bearing River" (2017) is a colored pencil drawing by Marie Brožová, created live in public at her famous Magic Pencil Gallery in the heart of Prague as part of her long-term project The Defense of Colored Pencils. The original artwork is an A0 format, measuring 118.9 × 84.1 cm (46.8 × 33.1 inches). This piece is featured in the Souls of Czech Rivers series, inspired by the Otava River.
The Story Behind the Art
The gold-bearing Otava River is home to several hydroelectric power plants, which is perhaps why the fairy’s hair crackles with electricity. Along its banks, one can step into the shoes of a gold prospector and, with a little luck, pan a few grains of gold.
Hidden Details to Discover
The otter in the drawing is a tribute to the Vydra (Otter) River, the Otava's primary source.
