"Merlin" (2014) is a colored pencil drawing by Marie Brožová, created live in public in Prague as part of her long-term project The Defense of Colored Pencils. The original artwork is an A0 format, measuring 118.9 × 84.1 cm (46.8 × 33.1 inches). This piece is featured in the Celtic Year series.
The Story Behind the Art
In this drawing, we encounter the wizard Merlin at the moment he enters the Arthurian legends as a youth of unknown origins—said to be sired by a demon or a pagan god. He was destined to be sacrificed so King Vortigern could finally complete his castle on Salisbury Plain, which mysteriously collapsed every single night. In his very first vision, young Merlin saw two dragons fighting beneath the castle's foundations. Using his magic, he overcame them, became a royal advisor, and later served as the tutor to the future King Arthur. According to many legends, he was also the last Celtic druid. In the lower-left corner, the Lady of the Lake appears with the sword Excalibur.
Hidden Details to Discover
The ornament featured in this piece is the Arthurian cross of the Knights of the Round Table, seekers of the Holy Grail, with a form derived from the traditional Celtic triad. In the lower-left corner, a druid cat clutches an ankh—an ancient Egyptian hieroglyph representing life. In esoteric traditions, the ankh is used in a thousand different ways, from healing and energy cleansing to serving as a key to the underworld.
