"Beltane" (2014) is a colored pencil drawing by Marie Brožová, created live in public at her Magic Pencil Gallery in the heart of Prague as part of her long-term project The Defense of Colored Pencils. The original artwork is an impressive A0 format, measuring 118.9 × 84.1 cm (46.8 × 33.1 inches). This piece is featured in The Celtic Year series.
The Story Behind the Art
This intricate drawing captures the celebrations of Beltane, probably the most famous festival of Celtic tradition. Starting on May Eve as the first star rises, Beltane literally means "bright fire" or "cleansing fire." This ancient festival of fertility and lovers was a joyous time for new life and union, often symbolized by the raising of Maypoles to represent the merging of masculine and feminine energies – the wedding of Earth and Sky. To this day, Beltane remains a celebration of joy, freedom, love, and beauty.

The wedding wreath motif symbolizes a birch wicker ornament, which ancient Celts used instead of engagement rings to exchange as gifts between lovers.
