Mysterious Island (postcard)

"Mysterious Island" (2013) is a colored pencil drawing by Marie Brožová, created live in public at her famous Magic Pencil Gallery in the heart of Prague as part of her long-term project The Defense of Colored Pencils. The original artwork is an impressive A0 format, measuring 118.9 × 84.1 cm (46.8 × 33.1 inches).

The Story Behind the Art

In a dream, a unicorn guided the artist to a place hidden deep within – a sanctuary away from the hustle and bustle of the world. It is a place designed for meditation. On a small island near a rushing waterfall, an ancient tree sleeps, cradling a lemon teahouse in its branches. Here, you can refresh your tired soul, embrace quiet solitude, and recharge for the days ahead. Siamese cats row a boat full of lemons to the island, guarding your dreams and ensuring no one disturbs your peace.

Hidden Details to Discover

A fair warning: if you believe meditation and humor don’t mix, you might want to stop reading here. Beneath the teahouse roof, Tibetan prayer flags flutter in the breeze – right next to a pair of tights drying on the same line. Who is to say they aren’t offering up their own prayers for us? And a small tip: you will find four Siamese cats in the drawing; please, don’t mistake them for monkeys.
