"Haven of Sleep" (2005) is a colored pencil drawing by Prague artist Marie Brožová. Created in her atelier, the original artwork is an A2 format piece, measuring 59.4 × 42 cm (23.4 × 16.5 inches).
The Story Behind the Art
A soul at rest in the world between worlds, suspended among the stars with her head tucked beneath colorful pillows, where unicorns and Pegasi of her dreams roam. Below, the sun begins to rise and airplanes herald a new day, but the moon silences the white rooster: Do not crow yet; wait a while, the soul still needs her rest!
Hidden Details to Discover
People say this image helps them fall asleep, calming nightmares or midnight wakefulness. The patterns on some of the pillows are inspired by mosaics from Samarkand – a place Marie Brožová often dreams of, despite never having visited. Perhaps it is no coincidence that one branch of her ancestors lived near there.
