Bridge across the River of Time (postcard)

"Bridge across the River of Time" (2019) is a colored pencil drawing by Marie Brožová, created live in public at her Magic Pencil Gallery in the heart of Prague as part of her long-term project The Defense of Colored Pencils. The original artwork is an impressive A0 format, measuring 118.9 × 84.1 cm (46.8 × 33.1 inches).

The Story Behind the Art

This intricate, allegorical drawing captures the cyclical journey of human life as it flows across the landscape of time: from the carefree days of childhood (represented by a little girl with a ball) and the searching years of adolescence (depicted as a young girl holding a cat), to youth (shown as a young man navigating a boat, seeking his true purpose and place in the world) and discovering a soulmate (lovers beneath an oak tree). Finally, it depicts the wisdom of maturity (a female wanderer with a staff), a stage where one can view life from the far shore and return to the joy and freedom of childhood.

Hidden Details to Discover

While human life is but a fleeting moment compared to nature, the ancient oak tree spans the river like a permanent bridge, remaining seemingly untouched by time. The river appears constant to the naked eye, yet its waters are ever-flowing, serving as a powerful metaphor for the unstoppable passage of time.
