The Origin Story: From a Woodland Cabin to a Bestseller

“The Tarot came into my life during the years before the start of my project, The Defense of Colored Pencil, when I lived with my husband far from civilization in our woodland cabin,” recalls MAB. “At that time, a Prague-based American poet, Willie Watson, created a unique work of 78 poems—one for each tarot card. He approached me because he was looking for an artist who would draw original cards according to the poems. I didn’t know anything about the Tarot, but the theme was visually irresistible. The drawings took me over two years of deep immersion, and translating the poems into Czech took another year.”

Refusing to compromise on production quality, MAB bypassed the mainstream "print cheap, sell dear" publishing industry. Together with her husband, she founded an independent publishing house. To date, they have successfully launched ten book titles, several of which have gone through multiple editions.
