Witches of the Summer Storm (poster)

"Witches of the Summer Storm" (2007) is a colored pencil drawing by Marie Brožová, created live in public in Jindřichův Hradec (Czech Republic) as part of her long-term project The Defense of Colored Pencils. The original artwork is an impressive A0 format, measuring 118.9 × 84.1 cm (46.8 × 33.1 inches).

The Story Behind the Art

Dark, dramatic clouds loom high above the town's rooftops. As a summer storm approaches, a gathering of beautiful witches has eagerly mounted their brooms, packing up their pots and pans to clatter them enthusiastically through the air to spark flashes of lightning. They are all bound for a secret clearing where they can cook up a fabulous feast in the very best company. Whimsical witch-cats fly right alongside them—and a few exceptionally clever felines even hold a official license to pilot their own brooms!

When asked why the witches in her artwork are always so young and stunning, Marie Brožová simply smiles and answers that those old, ugly hags with warts on their noses are just the less skillful ones who never truly mastered their craft. After all, the very first thing any clever witch would do is brew up a potion of eternal youth and beauty for herself!

Look closely amidst the rushing wind: just a short distance away, a charming hat adorned with summer flowers floats by, already claimed as a cozy home by tiny fairies. Who could have lost such a treasure to the gusting storm?
