"Waning Moon" (2017) is a colored pencil drawing by Marie Brožová, created live in public at her famous Magic Pencil Gallery in the heart of Prague as part of her long-term project The Defense of Colored Pencils. The original artwork is an impressive A0 format, measuring 118.9 × 84.1 cm (46.8 × 33.1 inches).
The Story Behind the Art
This enchanting piece symbolizes the fluid, ever-shifting nature of feminine energy as it manifests during the final phase of the lunar cycle. At this sacred time, the inner vessel—once filled to the brim by the full moon—gently begins to overflow. It is a moment to channel this powerful current into pure creativity, letting it bloom rather than erupt into storm clouds of emotion. In this twilight realm, every woman becomes a magical enchantress, possessing the immense power embodied by the young beauty in the radiant red dress. Hovering on a silver crescent moon swing above a sleepy poppy field, she softly blows iridescent soap bubbles that carry her diverse, rainbow-colored desires. Whether she chooses to manifest them into reality is entirely up to her. The universe is listening.
Hidden Details to Discover
Look closely at the swing to find a companion: the black cat featured in the artwork truly existed and used to visit the artist in her garden. She was fittingly named Moon, a nod to her remarkable white face mask and the little splash of white at the very tip of her tail.
