"Three Nuts for the Squirrel" (2004) is a colored pencil drawing by Marie Brožová, created live in public in Prague at the very beginning of her long-term project The Defense of Colored Pencils. The original artwork is an impressive A0 format, measuring 118.9 × 84.1 cm (46.8 × 33.1 inches).

The Story Behind the Art

Deep in the woods, nestled safely among the tree roots, children have built a whimsical miniature city out of twigs and moss—and a bustling community of tiny woodland people has already moved in! Take a closer look and explore this enchanting world to find a vibrant marketplace, a tiny castle with a queen peeking curiously through her window, and even a Stations of the Cross path lined with colorful toadstool shrines. You can spot a busy fisherman and a washerwoman by the riverbank, goat and sheep herders just outside the city walls, and many other delightful professions. In the bottom-left corner, we catch a playful glimpse of a little boy who thought he was completely hidden. Perched nearby, a curious squirrel provides the perfect sense of scale for this tiny metropolis.

Look up! The modern airplane soaring across the top-right corner is a clever, unobtrusive reminder that this fairytale scene does not unfold in some faraway fantasy realm, but right in our own backyard. If only we still knew how to look...
