The Green Man (poster)

"The Green Man" (2014) is a colored pencil drawing by Marie Brožová, created live in public in Liberec (Czech Republic) as part of her long-term project The Defense of Colored Pencils. The original artwork is an impressive A0 format, measuring 118.9 × 84.1 cm (46.8 × 33.1 inches). This piece is featured in the Celtic Year series.

The Story Behind the Art

Hidden within the oak foliage is the figure of a mounted knight with a spear. He is the Green Man, a legendary being from Celtic mythology, and the protective spirit of greenery and nature. He symbolizes the never-ending cycle of life, renewed every spring. Although the Green Man motif can be found in pagan cultures worldwide, it was frequently used as a decorative ornament on Christian churches and cathedrals from the 11th to the 20th centuries, becoming particularly popular during the Gothic period.
