"The Great Cosmic Fitting Room" (2011) is a colored pencil drawing by Marie Brožová, created live in public in Prague as part of her long-term project The Defense of Colored Pencils. The original artwork is an impressive A0 format, measuring 118.9 × 84.1 cm (46.8 × 33.1 inches). 

The Story Behind the Art

In the heart of spacetime, amidst the planets of the solar system, stands a Tree of Life where souls from Earth come to choose new outfits. They cast off their old clothes with relief; some garments are heavily soiled from a difficult life, while others shine like new. Ready-made attire representing traditional lifestyles is readily available around the tree. To find unique pieces, such as an astronaut’s spacesuit or a royal robe, one must climb high into the canopy. In this piece, the souls themselves are depicted as carefree children with butterfly wings. They find a beggar's rags just as amusing as a doctor's white coat. Earth is visible in the far distance, and all of life's hardships and joys are perceived from this distant perspective.
