The Forbidden Fruit (poster)

"The Forbidden Fruit" (2005) is a colored pencil drawing by Prague artist Marie Brožová, created live in public in Hradec Králové (Czech Republic) as part of her long-term project The Defense of Colored Pencils. The original artwork is an impressive A0 format, measuring 118.9 × 84.1 cm (46.8 × 33.1 inches). 

The Story Behind the Art

On the lively facade of an Art Nouveau building, we see the biblical motif of Eve in the Garden of Eden, barely resisting the temptation of juicy apples from the Tree of Knowledge. A beautiful, whispering serpent twines around a window frozen by the cold glow of a television screen. In stark contrast to the vibrant paradise, we glimpse the grey world of people who are left with nothing but a mere apple core—having forgotten the surrounding beauty of the world. Yet, behind other windows, people remain colorful and happy, thriving on love and creativity.

Hidden Details to Discover

Marie Brožová drew inspiration from the wondrous world of Art Nouveau facades in the city of Hradec Králové where this piece was created. Look closely! All the apples have luscious lips.
