"The Bandits' Hideout Tree" (2006) is a colored pencil drawing by Marie Brožová, created live in public in Jičín (Czech Republic) as part of her long-term project The Defense of Colored Pencils. The original artwork is an impressive A0 format, measuring 118.9 × 84.1 cm (46.8 × 33.1 inches).

The Story Behind the Art

Welcome to the golden autumn crown of a massive walnut tree, home to arguably the least efficient criminal gang in history. This band of clumsy bandits spends less time plotting bank heists and far more time trying to pickpocket each other—mostly without any success. While they are busy arguing over stolen boots, a lively community of crafty cats, squirrels, owls, ravens, goblins, and forest fairies has moved in around them, quietly running the treehouse and laughing at the bandits' expense.

Hidden Details to Discover

This drawing is packed with humorous Easter eggs. Look closely into the lower right corner to find a bandit baby smiling happily from a basket, clearly unbothered by its chaotic family. Can you also spot who is actually managing the bandits' gold, or which squirrel is doing a better job at hoarding than the thieves themselves?
