"Shrine of the North" (2005) is a colored pencil drawing by Prague artist Marie Brožová. Created in her atelier, the original artwork is an A2 format piece, measuring 59.4 × 42 cm (23.4 × 16.5 inches).

The Story Behind the Art

Hidden deep within a silent, snow-covered forest, the mystical Shrine of the North rests beneath the heavy boughs of an ancient spruce tree, radiating a cozy amber light and gentle warmth into the freezing winter night. Perched atop the very crown of the tree, a glowing crescent moon balances perfectly, resembling a golden Christmas tree angel. Inside this sanctuary, the serene Lord of the North quietly sips his tea, accompanied by the spirits of forest animals. A majestic lynx guards a winding path softly lined with glowing snow lanterns, a mysterious golden key gleaming around its neck.

While the shrine offers a safe haven of warmth, the surrounding wilderness is ruled by unyielding, primal energies; hidden among the dark trees, a skull with glowing eyes rests on a pole—a tribute to the artist's favorite fairy tale about Baba Yaga.
