"Shrine of the East" (2005) is a colored pencil drawing by Prague artist Marie Brožová. Created in her atelier, the original artwork is an A2 format piece, measuring measuring 59.4 × 42 cm (23.4 × 16.5 inches).
The Story Behind the Art
High up in the crown of a mighty oak, a brave bogatyr of the East keeps company with a clever fox and a shimmering peacock, catching the golden spring sun with a simple shard of a mirror. The ancient tree is just beginning to wake, its budding branches teeming with singing birds and tiny, mischievous sprites. Down below, nestled in the soft green grass, a scholarly cat sits completely absorbed in a book, tethered by a golden chain. This whimsical scene is a nostalgic tribute to the legendary prologue of Alexander Pushkin’s epic poem, Ruslan and Lyudmila, a heartwarming memory from the artist's own childhood, when her grandfather would softly recite those very verses by her bedside.
Hidden Details to Discover
In the budding leaves, you will notice tiny letters of the alphabet. With each spring, everything starts anew and there is so much to learn!
