Sea of Silence (poster)

"Sea of Silence" (2005) is a colored pencil drawing by Marie Brožová, created live in public in Prague's Old Town Square as part of her long-term project The Defense of Colored Pencils. The original artwork is an A0 format, measuring 118.9 × 84.1 cm (46.8 × 33.1 inches). 

The Story Behind the Art

On his tiny planet, the Little Prince launches paper boats into the vast cosmos, aiming for the nearby Moon. Winged Pegasi soar among the stars, while in the bottom right corner, a blue-eyed unicorn holds a rose and a letter in its mouth. Beside the Little Prince, the Fox—taking the form of a girl—breathes in the scent of a plucked rose. Roses no longer grow on the planet, but somewhere on the dark side, the snake is still waiting.

Hidden Details to Discover

In the upper left, you can find the Collinder 399 asterism. While visible to the naked eye, it is best observed through binoculars within the constellation of Vulpecula (the Little Fox). Although commonly known as "The Coathanger," Marie Brožová sees it as the airplane in which the author of The Little Prince, Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, was lost in 1944.
