"Ruby Bogatyr" (2010) is a colored pencil drawing by Prague artist Marie Brožová, created live in public in Kutná Hora (Czech Republic) as part of her long-term project The Defense of Colored Pencils. The original artwork is an A0 format, measuring 118.9 x 84.1 cm (46.8 x 33.1 inches). This image is featured as an illustration in the artist's second book, The Soul of Stones.
The Story Behind the Art
A legendary hero in golden armor, with copper-toned hair and beard, has dismounted his steed to rest by the fire. His company consists of two eagle owls with rubies on their foreheads and three talkative cats. The vibrant color saturation of this piece was directly shaped by the tropical weather of that particular summer. In the sweltering heat of nearly 40 degrees Celsius (104 °F), Marie Brožová's colored pencils were literally melting onto the paper.
