Passing on the Light (poster)

"Passing on the Light" (2006) is a colored pencil drawing by Marie Brožová, created live in public in Prague as part of her long-term project The Defense of Colored Pencils. The original artwork is an impressive A0 format, measuring 118.9 × 84.1 cm (46.8 × 33.1 inches).

The Story Behind the Art

Inspired by a traditional children's advent calendar, Marie Brožová's artwork offers a deeper discovery: instead of chocolates, its windows reveal the many ways light is passed on. We see the cradles of human civilization – from prehistoric times and Ancient Egypt to China and India. An angel lights a candle for a newborn, a teacher shares wisdom with a child, an athlete passes a relay baton, and people light candles at the graves of their loved ones. Even the Sun bestows its light upon the Moon, and the Statue of Liberty stands as a guiding beacon. While some eagerly await the light, others hide under black umbrellas as stars rain down from the sky. A grandmother with a chocolate heart lights a candle for her granddaughter, white horses scatter snow along a winter street, and at the very top, the final window of the advent calendar waits to be opened.

Hidden Details to Discover

In one of the windows, the artist herself can be found sitting between a devil and an angel, drawing inspiration from both the light and the darkness.
