Moon River (poster)

"Moon River" (2013) is a colored pencil drawing by Prague artist Marie Brožová, created live in public in Karlovy Vary (Czech Republic) as part of her long-term project The Defense of Colored Pencils. The original artwork is an impressive A0 format, measuring 118.9 × 84.1 cm (46.8 × 33.1 inches). This drawing is featured in the Souls of Czech Rivers series, inspired by the Ohře (Eger) River.

The Story Behind the Art

The mysterious Ohře River (Eger) flows from west to east—symbolically from dusk till dawn. As a guardian of underground treasures, it holds the keys to both healing springs and uranium deposits. Rising in Germany and winding through the wilderness of the Karlovy Vary region, the river's entire course feels like a battlefield between the dark powers and angels, a place where history shifted the borders between Slavic and Germanic lands through countless battles. Fittingly, many local churches are dedicated to the sword-bearing Archangel Michael. At the eastern horizon, the Hazmburk castle ruins crown a hill in the fertile 'Garden of Bohemia,' marking the area where the Ohře finally joins the Elbe River.

Hidden Details to Discover

The original Celtic name for the river—Agara—is interpreted in two ways: the River of Salmon, or the Moon River. Both meanings are beautifully captured in the sky above, where the river's waves shimmer in place of stars, while stars drift silently within the waves.
