Magic Carpet (poster)

"Magic Carpet" (2008) is a colored pencil drawing by Prague artist Marie Brožová, created live for the public in Slaný (Czech Republic) as part of her long-term project The Defense of Colored Pencils. The original artwork is an impressive A0 format, measuring 118.9 × 84.1 cm (46.8 × 33.1 inches).

Interesting Details

Marie Brožová created this piece as part of the Days of Turkish Culture festival. When people think of tulips, most imagine Holland. Yet, the true cradle of these picturesque flowers is actually Turkey, where the Lâle – as the Turks call it – grows wild.

After Mehmed II conquered Constantinople, he adorned the city and established numerous gardens. Under the reign of Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent, the Ottoman Empire reached its greatest heights, spanning from Asia Minor and the Balkans to the Persian Gulf and the shores of Gibraltar. On a peninsula in the Sea of Marmara, the sultans built Topkapı Palace – a "city within a city" where vast gardens offered ample space for their favorite flower: the tulip.

The "Tulip Era" reached its peak during the reign of Ahmed III and his Grand Vizier, a devoted tulip admirer. It was from Turkey that tulips first traveled to the Netherlands in the late 16th century, eventually spreading across all of Europe.
