Jacob's Ladder to Heaven (poster)

"Jacob's Ladder to Heaven" (2008) is a colored pencil drawing by Prague artist Marie Brožová, created live in public in Kutná Hora (Czech Republic) as part of her long-term project The Defense of Colored Pencils. The original artwork is an A0 format, measuring 118.9 × 84.1 cm (46.8 × 33.1 inches). 

The Story Behind the Art

Inspired by the magical backstreets of Kutná Hora, a Czech town famous for its medieval silver mines, this piece captures the timeless, enchanting atmosphere of Bohemian history. Under the spell of a Midsummer night, the spirits of old miners rise from the depths of the silver mines, climbing a dream-ladder behind St. Barbara, their patron saint. They pass the solitary tower of the Church of St. James, reaching toward the dark heavens. Street lamps and fireflies cast a soft glow on ivy-covered walls and hidden corners.

Hidden Details to Discover

Look closely at the "stairway to heaven". The artist depicts it as a ladder woven from flowering honeysuckle vines.
