"Hunter and Prey Mystery" (2004) is a colored pencil drawing by Prague artist Marie Brožová. She created this piece at the beginning of her long-term project The Defense of Colored Pencils. The original artwork is an A0 format, measuring 118.9 x 84.1 cm (46.8 x 33.1 inches).

The Story Behind the Art

Step through a gate in a picket fence adorned with grinning human skulls to enter a hidden palace of hides and furs. From this primal interior, ascend steep, treacherous walkways to the summit – a golden egg guarded by a raptor-spirit wearing a sacred headdress. The climb is harsh; the wind howls, and one wrong step means falling through the gaps. Along the way, you are confronted with uncomfortable truths: that we kill to survive, and that compassion often leads to defeat. Here, a personal, inescapable truth awaits every visitor. At the very top lies an observatory where, through newfound knowledge, you become the predator, growing wings of freedom.
