"Grandmother's Garden" (2006) is a colored pencil drawing by Marie Brožová, created live in public in Prague as part of her long-term project The Defense of Colored Pencils. The original artwork is an A0 format, measuring 118.9 × 84.1 cm (46.8 × 33.1 inches). 

The Story Behind the Art

In a magical, old-world autumn garden, Grandma steps out of her cozy little house, carrying a freshly baked pie and a pot of tea. Cats tug at her skirts while Grandpa watches fondly from inside, smoking his pipe. On the settee, a teacup awaits. The garden overflows with fruit, late roses, frolicking cats, toys, and hidden gnomes. This isn't just any garden; it's a place where pumpkins and water pumps smile, and magic happens all around to help with the chores. In the clouds above, the spirit of the late summer drifts by.

In this whimsical world, everything is alive – even the flowerpots have little faces. The smiling, winged watering cans hover in the air, tending to the blossoms to ease Grandma’s tired feet. To the keen eye of a cat lover, this heartwarming piece reveals exactly eight hidden cats.
