"Feline Palace" (2007) is a colored pencil drawing by Marie Brožová, created live in public in Prague as part of her long-term project The Defense of Colored Pencils. The original artwork is an A0 format, measuring 118.9 × 84.1 cm (46.8 × 33.1 inches). 

The Story Behind the Art

Hidden deep within the heart of a nocturnal forest lies the mystical Feline Palace – a secret place accessible only through the gateway of dreams. A little girl has successfully found her way inside. Granted rare entry by the cat guards through the special intercession of Lady Night herself, she gets to witness firsthand how these noble felines spend their nights. Inside the palace walls, a wondrous world unfolds: feline musketeers playing a tense game of cards, a master jeweler carefully examining precious gems, a cat princess having her royal dress fitted in front of a mirror, a cat grandmother weaving tales for her grandchildren, and a loving couple sharing a quiet moment hidden in the rose garden. And if we are to believe the wise cuckoos resting in the oak branches in the top left corner, it is already half-past four in the morning.

The enchanting story of the Feline Palace was passed down to Marie Brožová by her mother, who used to weave magical fairy tales inspired by their shared adventures. The visual design of the palace was sparked by a real place from the artist's childhood – an old, majestic oak grove where a young spruce forest grew among the roots. The low-hanging branches created perfect, natural green rooms just high enough for little Marie to hide and wander from one "spruce hall" to another. To her eyes, this mysterious forest sanctuary truly came to life after the sun went down.
