"Colors of the Leaves" (2018) is a colored pencil drawing by Marie Brožová, created live in public in the Prague Botanical Garden as part of her long-term project The Defense of Colored Pencils. The original artwork is an A0 format, measuring 118.9 × 84.1 cm (46.8 × 33.1 inches).
The Story Behind the Art
High above the ground, tucked away in the crown of a pine tree, live tiny forest spirits in their woodland dwellings. Look closely to find a grandmother’s cottage, a hermit’s cave, and even a windmill. Ships made of autumn leaves are anchored to the branches, while the height makes the ground below feel like a distant planet.
Hidden Details to Discover
Notice the whimsical detail of the grandmother’s cottage – its window forms an eye, the door a nose, and the stairs a mouth, giving the house a face of its own.
